Synagogue Announces Tzedaka Mug Contest

Tzedaka is a Hebrew word literally meaning "justice" but traditionally standing for "charity". However the concept of Tzedaka is being more commonly used to signify charity as an obligation pertaining to the Jewish culture rather than any other act of generosity or good will.

They collect Tzedaka in specially designed massive mugs which are supposed to be as fancy and whimsical as any other moneybox can be.

The Grand Choral Synagogue of St. Petersburg is starting the Tzedaka Mug Contest and invites everyone who would claim to be creative enough not only to design a new mug, but also accept responsibility for the consequent workmanship.

"The Jewish Tradition insists on the proper decoration of a Tzedaka Mug. Things must be beautiful and eye-catching, says Alexei Gnesin, contest co-ordinator. - We want our mugs to be in line with that statement. Above all, the new mugs are meant to attract public attention to the idea behind Tzedaka, the mandatory charity of the Jewish people. Besides making the mug look beautiful, that's the major point of this contest.

"The newly designed Tzedaka Mugs will be out by the start of this year's tourist season.
